Miraflores at 100
2021 marks a century since my great grandfather, Dr. Aureliano Urrutia, began creating his San Antonio garden, Miraflores. He purchased the property in May 1921 and installed its first sculpture that year. As a man of both science and of art, the garden was his creative outlet. He was, at that time, recovering from the death of his first wife, Luz, and was beginning to realize that he might not be able to return to his native country of Mexico.

In celebration of Miraflores’ centennial…
Here’s a video presentation about Miraflores from a few years ago. The event was Pecha Kucha, a storytelling format where presenters narrate 20 slides of 20 seconds each. The venue was the Pearl Stables building—550 people attended, and thanks to WOAI journalist and MC Randy Beamer, I’ve since been inspired to change the way I pronounce my last name, although I’m not quite so dramatic as he.

Also in Fall 2021, my book, Miraflores: San Antonio’s Mexican Garden of Memory, is scheduled to be released. I look forward to sharing that with you.
