Jardín de Afuera, the Mexican creativity of Miraflores

  • Period Modern 4347 McCullough Avenue Olmos Park, TX, 78212 United States (map)

Please join us on Saturday February 11, 2023 at 1 pm, when Anne Elise Urrutia, author of Miraflores, will speak, generously hosted by Period Modern, located at 4347 McCullough Avenue, San Antonio, Texas. You can also do your Valentine’s Day shopping at this lovely vintage modern furniture and art shop!

Her talk, entitled “Jardín de Afuera,” will focus on the exclusively Mexican creative minds and hands that made Miraflores, the beautiful mid-century garden of her great-grandfather, Dr. Aureliano Urrutia.

Dr. Urrutia, a prominent physician from Mexico City, created Miraflores after immigrating to San Antonio, Texas from Mexico in 1914 during the Mexican Revolution. A man of science, Urrutia valued nature, art, literature, history, and community.

The garden, located near the headwaters of the San Antonio River, was built from 1921 to 1962. Its architecture, fountains, sculpture, artisanship, and plants formed a cultural landscape reflecting Urrutia’s deep connection to his homeland.

Disregard and destruction has taken its toll on the garden, which today is barely recognizable.

Despite the ongoing decay, Anne Elise Urrutia has uncovered the garden’s history and recreated the doctor’s lost landscape in words and pictures in her book Miraflores, San Antonio’s Mexican Garden of Memory.

We hope you will join us at Period Modern for this presentation and Q&A session. Ms. Urrutia will be available afterward for book-signing. Books are available for purchase from her website at www.quintaurrutia.com. A limited supply will also be available at the event.
